How Excellence Is Judged
The Top100Safaris™ Selection
Each year, Top100Safaris™ recognizes a limited selection of safari lodges across Africa, spanning regions, designs, and price points, based on rigorous evaluation across our five core pillars of safari excellence.
Wildlife Density
Wildlife density assesses the richness and reliability of wildlife encounters at a lodge. It evaluates animal diversity, key species presence, habitat health, and guiding expertise to ensure authentic safari experiences.
Guest Experience
Guest experience assesses how well a lodge delivers comfort, service, and hospitality alongside its safari offering. It examines accommodation, staff professionalism, dining, and attention to detail to ensure a refined and seamless stay.
Conservation
Conservation assesses how a lodge safeguards the landscapes and communities it operates within. It examines sustainability practices, wildlife protection initiatives, and long-term environmental responsibility to ensure tourism supports conservation, not exploitation.
Destination Value
Destination Value assesses whether a lodge is a compelling destination in its own right. It considers location, wilderness access, and how meaningfully the lodge deepens the overall safari experience beyond accommodation alone.
Guiding & Service
Guiding & Service evaluates the expertise of guides and the consistency of hospitality throughout the guest journey. It considers wildlife interpretation, professionalism, attention to detail, and the reliability of service at every touchpoint.
Clover Rating System
What the Clover Represents
The Top100Safaris™ Clover is an independent mark of safari excellence. Awarded annually, it recognises safari lodges that demonstrate rare balance across five defining pillars: wildlife quality, guiding and service, conservation impact, destination value, and guest experience. Clovers are rare by nature — and excellence should be too.
A One Clover rating is awarded to safari lodges that meet Top100Safaris™’ standards of excellence across all five defining pillars and represent high-quality, trustworthy safari experiences.
A Two Clover rating is awarded to safari lodges that deliver an exceptional safari experience and stand clearly above the recommended standard, while not yet reaching the rare, benchmark status of Three Clovers.
Three Clovers are awarded to safari lodges that represent the highest possible standard of safari excellence in Africa. This designation is reserved for lodges that are not just exceptional, but benchmark-defining — places that set the reference point for what a safari can be.
